Happy New Year! Oh, I'm a week late...Had a great trip to NYC this week for a little thing called JAZZ and now I'm back to DC and ready to run with Washington Women in Jazz Festival 2012. While I finish up the schedule for this years events (hint:every quadrant will be included!) please turn your attention to the inaugural! Young! Artist! Contest!

I came up with this arrangement for "Tracks of My Tears" in 2004. I saw Smokey Robinson in the flesh that year when Prof. Dennis Wilson let me tag along to the BET Walk of Fame rehearsal in NE DC. However, the best part of the whole day was Stevie Wonder and his reggae version of "Tears of a Clown". It made me CRY it was so funky. It inspired me to take liberties with my version of "Tracks of My Tears", and I brought it back for a second round with my favorite guitarist.

You might know Shannon Gunn from BCJO, or her new all-female big band Shannon Gunn and the Bullettes. Did you know Shannon put on a great show yesterday afternoon at George Mason?

Her love of jazz trombone was only outdone by her dedication to hunting down and transcribing historically hip jazz recordings. What a testament to her hard work and determination! Shannon put together a great band, Lydia Lewis, Karine Chapdelaine, Leigh Pilzer, Sarah Hughes, Amy Loudin, Harry Waters, and myself. Bormet organized the First Annual Washington Women in Jazz Festival: The D.C. jazz community has rallied around her, and her weekly shows throughout March have been well attended. They've also featured some burnin' female instrumentalists and singers. This Wednesday's show should be no different. D.C. vocalist Christie Dashiell and and alto saxophonist Sarah Hughes headline this show, the last edition of the WWJF until the second annual picks up 11 months from now. Dashiell, a recent graduate of Howard University's Jazz Studies program, is D.C.'s most exciting rising vocal talent. She's got pipes and an uncanny intellect as a scat improviser, but it's the way she nestles into a tune, believes in the lyrics and makes them felt, that makes her so disarming. Hughes, meanwhile, is a melodic player who's most influenced by 1950s and '60s cool jazz. An unassuming personality, she crept up on folks at CapitalBop's D.C. Thanks to our great friends and fellow jazz advocates CapitalBop we have an extra special ADDITION to the WWJF. You might have attended spectacular jazz loft events before, and we will continue with the same format. There are two featured performers, my fellow DESA Alum and current Howard Grad student in Jazz Voice, the marvelous Integriti Reeves. We truly reconnected at the Kurt Elling Masterclass last November. She was selected to sing for him at the Kennedy Center, and I accompanied the entire class on piano. When she found out about this festival she immediately got in touch with me to put her full support behind it, and has been at the first 2 shows selling tickets and handing out fabulous flyer for me! In the city of interns, she is the most talented one out there. Now she can take the stage herself and give a great show!
Also featured will be tap dancer extraordinaire Melissa Frakman. Melissa has been all over, from Asia to North America, studying and teaching dance. We were kindred spirits on our first meeting and she performed on my Graduate Recital at Howard last May. So here it is, A WWJF tap premiere! The whole DC Jazz community is benefiting from the DC Tap Fest next month (founded by another Ellington Alum--Maud Arnold). Melissa's performance Wednesday will be a preview of our awesome dance community in April!

After the features, there will be an open jam session, everyone is invited to sit in, so bring your horn and we'll party WWJF Jazz Loft style. See you there!

Last week I told you about the First Annual Washington Women in Jazz Festival, organized by local pianist Amy K. Bormet. It begins this week at Twins. The evening's first set belongs to Melissa Gardiner, a Julliard-educated trombonist whose sound is, put bluntly, badass. It's a lyrical phrasing and pacing that could fairly be called "classical," perhaps even "old school," delivered with a swagger that all but grins at you and just the hint of a growl. The second set is by Lena Seikaly–one of the contenders for D.C.'s best singer, with a rich voice and precise articulation that belies her enormous creativity on the vocal. There's a crossover element, too: Seikaly will be in Gardiner's band, and Gardiner in Seikaly's. They perform at 8 and 10 p.m. at Twins, 1344 U St. NW. $15. ---Mike West

Back from Brazil and straight to Bohemian Caverns!

Matt and I had a great time in Brazil meeting amazing people (and musicians!), seeing beautiful places and eating some serious food. They really know how to do breakfast.
Now that we have returned to reality I am pleased to discover that while I was gone Bohemian Caverns bought me a NEW PIANO! Thanks guys. I always wanted to play the piano. I continue to perform there every Monday with the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra. Come check us out!

Here's some photos I took of Brazil. I only have 1000 more. Matt and I are really excited to put on a great show with Aqui Oh! at BrazilFEST! on November 20th at 5pm. We have been writing new tunes and new charts like CRAZY PEOPLE since we've been back. We've expanded the band to include fabulous trumpeter Joe Herrera and flute/sax master Brent Birckhead. Not only are they incredibly good looking, but they can PLAY. This is going to be a really really really great show. See you there!

Matt and I are honeymooning in Brazil for a month. Can't put into words how excited I am about this. We will have 4 weeks and we're going to Rio, Ilha Grande, Parati, Buzios, Ouro Preto, Belo Horizonte, and Salvador de Bahia. Looking forward to shedding my Portuguese and doing some serious relaxing. Check out this video of our band Aqui Oh performing Jobim's "Corcovado" and know that we'll be there soon!

I'm having a truly inspiring time working with the students at Davey Yarborough's Washington Jazz Arts Institute. We just wrapped up week two, and our first concert is next Friday. What is my personal sign of spring? Jazz Appreciation Month. That's right. Appreciate me. There are so many great events going on this month it's overwhelming. Check out some examples on my new favorite blog http://dcjazzshows.blogspot.com/.
My dear Diev and I were out today at legendary Bucky Pizzarelli's masterclass and were thrilled to get to meet him in person after the show. What an amazing guitarist, and a cheerful guy to be around. I think he smiled through the whole set with bassist Tommy Cecil.

As for my own contributions to appreciating jazz this month, I will be performing tonight with the Howard University Jazz Ensemble at Westminster Church in SW DC. We will also be performing Sunday at the Anacostia Community Museum.

I am thrilled that my composition and arrangement "Lightning" will be performed by HU's (Downbeat Award-Winning!) Afro-Blue, together with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra on April 24th at 5pm in the Sylvan Theatre on the National Mall for the closing weekend of JAM activities. Many thanks to fabulous arranger and donut-bringer Scott Silbert for his tips on the arrangement!

Please, if you can, appreciate some real live jazz this month.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of hearing pianist Eric Lewis perform solo piano for a free masterclass at THEARC in southeast. He is a kind and thoughtful person, listening to the young students of the Levine School play their solo pieces and giving them insightful commentary before stepping up to the piano himself.

What did the Monk-Competition-winning-Wynton-Marsalis-recording-jazz-musician's-musician play?
Green Chimneys? Take the A-Train? 26-2?

Try Michael Jackson's "Human Nature". He has completely re-branded himself as a rock pianist, insisting he created a new genre of "rockjazz" where he performs while standing with legs triangle-pose askew and sporting a sparkling bit of wrist armor. Somehow it's cynical and great at the same time.

I can't deny that I enjoyed his raucous rendition of Human Nature, all though I was living for the more Cecil Taylor-esque moments of disconcerting hammer attack. It's interesting that it isn't enough for him to be at the top of the heap in the jazz world, financially or personally. He is clearly an incredible musician, and he was very vocal about his choices that have lead him to this point. Rock tunes by Jazz Pianists. It's been done before, but I didn't expect from him.

I can't believe it's March already. I tried to ride my bike yesterday, but it was still too cold for me to make it up to HU. The last month has been busy, accompanying myriad Howard University recitals with amazing peers of mine, like Josh Walker and Brent Birckhead (March 6th!).
In the midst of all this schooling, I am thrilled to announce that I have been selected for the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program at the Kennedy Center. The program is a 2-week residency designed for jazz musicians under 30, with an emphasis on original compositions. I had a great time recording my audition tunes this past fall with Karine Chapdelaine and Dave McDonald, so I'm glad this worked out for me, as well as my Howard/DC-ites and Nate Jolley, John Kocur, and Christie Dashiell.

I know this is going to be a great experience, and I'm looking forward to meeting some rowdy jazz kids. The program runs March 15-28th with performances at the Kennedy Center and venues on the east coast, so I will put the dates on my calendar soon.
